Mongar Valley is the Eastern Hub of Bhutan and one of the fastest developing districts in the country located in eastern Bhutan. With about 2 days of drive from the Capital, or a 25 minutes flight till Bumthang and an additional 6 hour drive, Mongar is the commercial hub and a hotspot for locals and remote ethnic communities of far eastern Bhutan. The District Administration offices based in the Dzong/Fortress and with their vision of making Mongar “A happy, literate and socio-economically vibrant community within a rich culture and natural environment”, makes the valley a prime target for enhancement of more development and tourism activities since based along the West-East Lateral Highway.
The drive and landscape towards Mongar is spectacular along remote highland settlements, forests of abundant multicolored Rhododendron flowers, thick jungles of coniferous trees, deep gorges and steep cliffs, stunning waterfalls and, vibrant and sub-tropical villages and farmlands.
Though a small town of concrete buildings and vibrant local commercial activities, Mongar valley is also home to nearby isolated villages and communities with their unique culture and traditions. Apart from agriculture farming, the people of these remote villages are known for their expert weaving of home-based textile products, handcrafted intricate flasks (for wine, etc), cane and bamboo products and various traditional masks.
Visiting the Monggar Dzong, nearby temples and excursions of Drametse, Khengkhar, Jurmey and Gongdue villages are some of the highlights of Mongarr valley.
