Bumthang Experiences

BUMTHANG – Bhutan’s Natural Honeypot!

Bumthang valley is popularly known as the ‘Spiritual Heartland of Bhutan’ as the valley is filled with numerous religious and sacred sites that every Buddhist aspires to visit at least once in their lifetime. Bumthang valley is also popularly known as a ‘mini Switzerland’ because the wide expanse of alpine forests, lush green gentle glacial valley adorned with wild flowers is home to less than only 20,000 people making it an idle place to experience the peace and nature that Bhutan boasts of. Even though high on the bucket list while in Bhutan, Bumthang still remains an off the beaten path for visiting tourists as the valley is located in central Bhutan and is almost a 9 hours grueling drive Paro or a 25 minute domestic flight from the Paro International Airport.

The most important saint in Bhutan Guru Padmasambhava or popularly known as Guru Rinpoche is said to have visited the Bumthang valley in the 8th century to subdue an evil malignant deity creating havoc to the local king as well as to the people; having subdued, reprimanded and converted the evil spirit into a protector and guardian of Buddhism the Guru also visited many locales in and around the valley and blessed and sanctified many places making it a present day must visit pilgrimage site for all Bhutanese as well as all followers of Guru Padmasambhava around the world.

While Bumthang is filled with many sacred sites, the valley also offers a peaceful respite and an ideal place to explore and be immersed in the serene and calm environment. With numerous rich cultural heritage sites, many short hikes, day trips to nearby villages and interactions with the villagers, an excursion of Bumthang valley is a perfect getaway to rejuvenate and experience the spiritual peace and happiness of the soul. Bumthang Valley is Bhutan’s honeypot for tourists with its pristine natural stunning landscape, sacred pilgrimage sites and the local government’s eco-tourism initiatives to maintain the status quo.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.

A quick visit to the Swiss Cheese Factory and Brewery is a refreshing alternative after visiting many temples and religious sites in the Bumthang valley. The Factory was started in the late 1960’s by a Swiss national Mr Fritz Maurer who visited Bhutan and settled in Bumthang.

Exploring the Tang valley and its landscape on horseback is the perfect outdoors activity for the adventurous traveler as well as a family group. Tang is a wide open valley (albeit small) so the horse riding is a relaxed experience while feasting in the scenic landscape of mountains and rivers.

The site of the Ta Rimochen was blessed by Guru Rinpoche and his Tibetan spiritual consort Khandro Yeshey Tshogyal in the 8th Century. Beside the main temple is a huge cliff decorated with tiger stipes thus rending its name Ta Rimochen meaning tiger stripes. The site is noted for its hand, foot and body imprints of Guru and Yeshey Tshogyal and rock markings of various religious texts and symbols

Tang is a remote village located about an hour’s drive from the main Bumthang town and an excursion of the valley is an interesting off the beaten path experience. Though not much in terms of tourist attractions or monuments per se, however the picturesque landscape and interactions with the smiling farmers make the trip worth the while.
