Trongsa - The Capital of Eastern Bhutan
Trongsa meaning ‘new village’ in the local dialect gets its name from the retreats, temples, hermit residences and small villages that grew up around the spectacular Trongsa Dzong / Fortress of the Vanguard of Warriors. Trongsa was an important hub during the reign of the First and Second King of Bhutan and it still is, as traditionally the Kings of Bhutan first becomes the Trongsa Penlop (Governor) before being named the Crown Prince and eventually the Dragon King.
Located in central Bhutan, the West-East Lateral Highway runs along the main town of Trongsa and is about 5-6 hours of straight drive from the Capital. The small town is located on a steep ridge and enjoys sweeping views of the entire landscape of scattered villages, traditional houses and the magnificent Fortress in the center.
Trongsa has its share of major attractions in the main town, however the numerous myths, legends and stories of demons and legendary heroes make the valley more alluring and mysterious. Agriculture farming is the main source of income for majority of the population and farmers grow almost all kinds of crops and in some areas potatoes are the main source of cash income.
