Gom Kora - The Tiger's Nest Monastery of East

Gom Kora Lhakhang/ Temple is an hour drive from Trashigang towards Trashi Yangtse Valley located on the banks of Kholong Chu / River and surrounded by vibrant paddy fields. Though officially a temple however the whole area around the temple and along the river banks are filled with sacred sites. Gom Kora and the surrounding areas are blessed by the great saint Guru Padmasambhava commonly known as Guru Rinpoche and is considered as one of the most important spiritual sites of Eastern Bhutan similar to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro.

According to legend, an evil spirit from Tibet escaped and was hiding on the banks of the Kholong Chhu river. Guru Rimpoche in order to subdue the evil spirit meditated on the current site, and while doing so the evil spirit took the form of a snake and tried to flee away. However, Guru also took the form of a Garuda (mythical bird) and in the run and chase through the rocks and caves the two animals left many body imprints before Guru finally subdued the spirit. There are body imprints of Guru Rinpoche, imprints of the Garuda bird and the snake and foot imprints of Dakini (celestial female beings). In a small cave where Guru meditated it is believed that on auspicious days holy water drips from the walls and this water is believed to be the nectar of immortality.

The temple has many scared relics including a Garuda egg (egg shaped stone), an old giant Buddha painting and beautiful murals that are painted on the walls. Due to its sanctity people from the nearby villages and districts are seamlessly seen circumambulating and offering prayers in this spiritual site.

A 3 days Festival is conducted every year whereby people from the neighboring villages and even from as far as Arnachul Pradesh (in India) congregate to witness the masked dances and take part in the celebrations.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.

A quick visit to the Swiss Cheese Factory and Brewery is a refreshing alternative after visiting many temples and religious sites in the Bumthang valley. The Factory was started in the late 1960’s by a Swiss national Mr Fritz Maurer who visited Bhutan and settled in Bumthang.
