Chorten Kora - The Dazzling White Stupa

Chorten Kora is a dazzling white Stupa situated on the banks of the icy cold Kholong Chu/ River in the middle of the Trashi Yangtse town. Built in the image of the Boudanath Temple in Kathmandu valley, Chorten Kora is magnificently surrounded by the soaring mountains and the fluttering prayer flags, and is one of the most important spiritual site and landmark of the valley.

The Stupa was build by saint Lama Ngawang Loday in the year 1740 to subdue a demon that was causing harm to the local people in the valley. Another reason for building this Stupa at Trashi Yangtsi was to avoid locals taking arduous pilgrimages to Kathmandu to see the Boudhanath Stupa with its prominent eyes painted at the four cardinal walls, which is also one of the most important Buddhist temple in the world. Therefore, a replica was built in Trashi Yangste. According to legend, it is believed that during the construction a 16 years old girl (said to be a dakini / celestial being) from Arunachal Pradesh (Indian state that borders with Trashi Yangtse) sacrificed herself and was entombed inside the Stupa in order to meditate and free all sentient beings from suffering. A Bhutanese feature film called ‘Chorten Kora’ was made based on the story of the young girl and the construction and consecration of the Stupa.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.
