Located along the West-East Lateral Highway Wangdue Phodrang or simply known as Wangdue is a wide valley alongside the Punakha Valley, about 2 hours drive from the capital Thimphu city. While the newly relocated Bajo town is the town center, Wangdue is more a large rural district of scattered villages with elevation ranging from 800 – 5,800 meters above the sea level. With a land cover of 4,308 square kilometers Wangdue enjoys an extremely varied climatic conditions ranging from sub-tropical forests in the south to cool and alpine regions in the north. Wangdue is environmentally protected with majority of its land under the jurisdiction of the Wangchuck Centennial Park, Jigme Dorji National Park and Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park which are all connected by biological corridors.
With a rich natural heritage and a noble vision of the district administration office of “A sustainably developed Dzongkhag (district) with healthy, wealthy and happy people”, the people of affluent Wandgue enjoys a fine balance between development, tourism and happiness. With its varied climate and hardworking people, rice is grown as the staple diet along with numerous types of tropical and sub-tropical fruits and vegetables. Wangdue is also home to many rare and exotic special of flora and fauna like the Red Panda, Leopards, White-Bellied Heron and the most rare and heavenly Black Necked Cranes.
Apart from the recently renovated Wandgue Dzong, getting blessing from the Fertility Temple and excursion of interesting villages, one of the most worthwhile activity is exploring the beautiful Phobjika and Gangtey Valleys. While there are no tourist attractions per se nor museums or sites, however the experience offered by these valleys are peace, serenity and to soak in the natural beauty of the landscape to revive and rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. Gangtey and Phobjika valleys are also the chosen winter roosting grounds for the endangered Black Necked Cranes. Considered heavenly and blessed, these cranes fly in from Tibet beginning of September and fly back to Tibet by March every year. The Government of Bhutan and the residents have received much international commendation for their conservation efforts to preserve the valley in its natural landscape for these graceful and heavenly birds.
