The Most Beautiful Glacial Valleys of Bhutan

Gangtey and Phobjika are one of the most beautiful glacial valleys located at an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters above the sea level. It is about 5 hours drive from Thimphu across the Punakha and Wangdue valleys. A visit and excursion of Gangtey, Phobjika and neighboring valleys is a must do for every tourist visiting Bhutan. While there are no tourist attractions per se nor museums or sites, however the experience offered by these valleys are peace, serenity and to soak in the natural beauty of the landscape to revive and rejuvenate the mind, body and soul.

The valleys are also the winter residence/roosting grounds of the Black Necked Cranes. Considered heavenly and blessed birds, these cranes fly in from Tibet beginning of September and fly back to Tibet by March every year. These graceful birds are endangered with only a small population and many efforts are made by the locals and the government to ensure their safety and comfort.

The Gangtey Monastery is the most visible structure in the valley and the Monastery also serves as a school for Buddhism, hence one can interact with the monks and sit in with them during their prayers and rituals.

There are also many beautiful short hikes like the Gangtey Nature Trail which is about an hour or less or the full day 360 degree view hike and many others. A picnic lunch with a short hike and excursion of a traditional village is highly recommend for an authentic Bhutanese experience.

The view from there is the panoramic sight of almost all the tallest Himalayan Mountain of Bhutan like majestic Gangkar Puensum, formidable Table Mountain and Tiger Mountain. As it is located at the top, the view of the Himalayan ranges is better than anywhere in the area, even as compared to famous Dochula Pass.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.

A quick visit to the Swiss Cheese Factory and Brewery is a refreshing alternative after visiting many temples and religious sites in the Bumthang valley. The Factory was started in the late 1960’s by a Swiss national Mr Fritz Maurer who visited Bhutan and settled in Bumthang.
