Located about 2 hours drive away from the Capital Thimphu city, at an elevation of 1,200 meters above the sea level Punakha is one of the warmest places in the interior Himalayas of Bhutan. Being one of the most beautiful valleys for its lush green landscape, pleasant weather and colorful rice fields Punakha is the local hotspot tourist destination in the country and a must visit in every tour itineraries. Enjoying a rural landscape of peace and serenity, the valley is dotted with scattered villages, traditional farmhouses and is home to some of the major attractions appealing to both tourists and locals.

The Punakha Dzong / Palace of Great Happiness is definitely one of the most beautiful Dzongs in Bhutan celebrated for its grandiose and aesthetically pleasing architecture, historical and political significance. Located up north is the recently constructed Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Stupa enjoying sweeping views of the wide paddy fields, the meandering river and sleepy villages. A visit to the Nunnery is an experience to interact with the nuns and understand their ascetic way of life dedicated to the Buddha Dharma. Along with many other places of interest to visit, there are also many short hikes and day long hikes in and around the valley along with a chance to enjoy white water rafting in either of the male or female rivers.

Punakha also boasts of a fine choice in luxury hotels like the international chain of Aman Lodges, Six Senses, Uma by Como and many more in 3 star tourist hotels and resorts, all enjoying spectacular locations with excellent services and hospitality.

The view from there is the panoramic sight of almost all the tallest Himalayan Mountain of Bhutan like majestic Gangkar Puensum, formidable Table Mountain and Tiger Mountain. As it is located at the top, the view of the Himalayan ranges is better than anywhere in the area, even as compared to famous Dochula Pass.
