While Bhutan is known by many names, the most relevant is “The Land of Medicinal Herbs’ coined by ancient Tibetan traditional doctors as there are numerous medicinal plants and herbs grown in the country. The herbal plants/soil and the mineral rocks combine to give the hot springs a powerful natural healing of various medicinal values that is considered to cure many diseases and ailments. It is about 2 hours drive from Punakha to reach the hot springs of Gasa and is one of the most popular hot springs in the country popular with locals as well as tourists. While there are many hot springs in Bhutan, however the Gasa Hot Springs is the most popular with tourists due to its easy accessibility and close proximity, compared to others that are located in the remote regions.
The Hot Springs of Gasa are supposed to cure arthritis, skin diseases, ulcers, rheumatism, indigestion, tuberculosis and many other ailments. However, the results show only if you soak in the waters for a prolonged period and consecutively for a minimum of 3 years. While most people visit the hot spring in the hope that it could cure them of various ailments that medicines cannot, it has also become an annual visit for many to just relax and soak in the piping hot waters. In the last couple of years the site has developed enormously with showers and changing facilities, guesthouses and a royal guesthouse. The infrastructure is now comparatively well-appointed with separate pools for different temperatures and the implementation of behavioral and cleanliness standards.
The best time to visit to bathe in the hot springs is from October to April, and not advisable in the other months due to heavy rains.
