Merak and Sakteng - The Paradise of East
Merak and Sakteng are one of the few remote high altitude villages that is accessible by road and a perfect opportunity for tourists to visit without having to trek for multiple days. While it is easy to drive to the respective villages via a diversion, however it is recommended to drive to Merak first, explore Merak village, and then hike to Sakteng with an overnight halt at a campsite. From Sakteng you can drive back to your Hotel in Trashigang.
The scenic Merak and Sakteng villages is stunningly located amidst the snowcapped Himalayan Mountains and are located inside the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary. The people are called Brokpas meaning high-landers with their unique and distinct culture, dialect and costumes fascinating not only the tourists but even our own Bhutanese people. The houses of these nomads are beautifully built with stones on a lush green grounds while surrounded by snowcapped mountains. There are few government approved homestays and farmhouses to accommodate tourists and visitors.
Spending a night at the village will be even more enriching as you can experience the simple lifestyle of these nomads, interact with them and get more insight into the culture of these highlanders. While at the village it is for sure that travelers will get to hear the incredible story of the locals encountering with the mythical Yeti (Abominable Snowman) though scientific evidence is yet to validate the claims.
Another interesting activity to do is to grab the opportunity of wearing their unique tribal dress made from Yak and sheep wool especially designed to beat the harsh cold of the mountains. There are also many short hiking trails to the mountain tops to enjoy scenic 360 degree views. Travelers can visit the community schools, visit the classrooms and interact with the children who are shy yet curious to have photographs and interactions.
