Lhuentse Dzong
The Fortress of the Precious Peak of Spontaneous Fulfillment

Lhuentse Dzong formally known as Lhuendrup Rinchentse Dzong – The Fortress of the Precious Peak of Spontaneous Fulfillment is located on top of a hill overlooking the Kuri Chhu (Kuri River) and surrounding valleys. It is customary for all the Dzongs to be build by the river banks, on ridges, hill tops and any site that has a commanding view of the valleys as in the earlier times Dzongs were a stronghold to ward off all external invasions (especially from Tibet) and civil wars. These fortresses are always the most prominently spectacular structure in every districts in Bhutan and the Lhuentse Dzong is no exception.
Legend has it that, in the 16th Century when a highly accomplished monk (Lam Ngagi Wangchuk) was meditating at the site, a local deity appeared before the monk in the form of a bleating goat. The bleat was taken as an auspicious sign and a temple was built in 1552. The most sacred artifact of the main temple inside the Dzong is a statue of Tshepama, the Buddha of long life. Like all the Dzongs in the country, Lhuentse Dzong also houses the administrative offices along with the monastic body.
