Guru Rinpoche Statue at Takila
The 173 feet tall statue of Guru Nangsi Zilnoen at Lhuentse
The 173 feet tall statue of Guru Nangsi Zilnoen at Lhuentse is the world’s largest statue of Guru Padmasambhava commonly known as Guru Rinpoche. The statue was consturucted and consecrated in 2015 and was built on the site of an old Temple overlooking the beautiful valley of Tangmachu. The approach to the statue itself will be quite an experience for the travelers, passing through the vibrant paddy fields and traditional houses. At any point on your drive towards the big Guru, you can stop for a while, meet farmers, interact with them and enjoy the scenic view of the valley.
The Statue which is surrounded by 108 small stupas/ chortens is an important pilgrimage site among the Bhutanese and is gaining popularity among tourist alike. The building of the statue was prophesized by the great saint and treasure discoverer Terton Lerab Lingpa (1856 – 1926), and another prophecy was made by late Yogi Sonam Zangpo in the 20th Century stating that a Guru Statue was needed to be built in Takila for Peace, Prosperity and Happiness of the world and Bhutan in particular.
The interior of the Statue has a three storey Lhakhang/ Temple each housing statues of Guru Rinpoche and Buddha. Apart from the stunningly carved murals and painting, the Statue of Guru Ngadrama in the first Lhakhang has an interesting story. It is believed that the first and the only statue of Guru Ngadrama was built by Guru Padmasambhava himself at the Samye Monastery in Tibet but later when the Statue was destroyed, only a single picture of the statue was preserved. With the help of the pieces the first and only replica statue of Guru Ngadrama was built and installed at Takila.
Due to the sanctity of the site, locals of all ages from the nearby villages and districts come all the way to the site to offer prayers and circumambulate the statue, for tourists there is also a great opportunity to interact and exchange few words with the locals.
