Zhemgang is a remote and backward valley in central Bhutan with a significant percentage in forest cover and home to many endangered species of flora and fauna making the valley one of the global natural hotspots in the world. While Zhemgang does not have many tourist attractions per se, however what it lacks in manmade beauty the raw beauty of its pristine natural environment and culture of ethnic communities makes up for it all.
The main town of Zhemgang housing the Dzong/Fortress, district administrative offices and representative corporate and private offices is a small settlement along the old central-south lateral highway. While at the main town, it is worth your while to visit the distinctive Trong Heritage Village for maintaining its centuries old traditional village of neatly laid down stone houses, skillful use of locally available materials, earthquake resistant techniques, cobbled pathways and natural airflow and lights exemplifying the architectural splendor of Bhutan well maintained over the centuries.
Exploring the rustic nature is the main attraction of Zhemgang, which is plentiful in its varied natural wonders. Designated as Bhutan’s Crown Jewel and famed as a paradise for bird and animal life, the Royal Manas National Park located in the south central foothills of Bhutan is the oldest park instituted in 1964. Zhemgang is also home to more than 500 species of birds thriving within the pristine and untouched forest and is a paradise for bird lovers and ornithologist. Another must visit while in the valley is the the Dunmang Hot springs popular for numerous healing and curative benefits such as migraines, gastritis, piles, body aches, joint aches and healing fractured/dislocated joints.
Exploring the Zhemgang valley is an off the beaten path experience and a much sought after must visit for tourists who can make it all the way to this central part of the country.
