Trashigang Experience

Trashingang - The Land of Nomads

Geographically, Trashigang is the largest district in Bhutan with an area of 2,204.5 square kilometers and a population of only 71,768 people scattered all over the huge area. Trashigang is located about 551 kilometers away from the Capital, about 2 days of full day drive and a 35 minutes domestic flight to Youngphula Airport from Paro International Airport. Centuries ago, Trashigang used to be a bustling trade center for merchants from all over Bhutan looking to barter their goods with the Tibetans from Tibet. The mighty Trashigang Dzong/ Fortress of the Auspicious Hill is a conspicuous structure built on a ridge with high rise cliffs on all sides and like all Dzongs in the country, the Trashigang Dzong also serves as the district administration office. Due to its sheer location, legend has it that invading Tibetan armies retreated just by looking at the Dzong remarking that “it is not a Dzong on the ground, it is in the sky.”

While there are no major big towns and with only a small group of settlement posing as the main town, Trashigang comprises of scattered remote and ethnic communities with their unique culture and traditions. One such community is the village of Merak and Sakteng, extremely popular with tourists and a must visit hotspot destination of Eastern Bhutan. Merak and Sakteng are one of the few remote high altitude villages (now accessible by road with alternative spectacular trekking trails) and is stunningly located amidst the snowcapped Himalayan Mountains located inside the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary. The people are called Brokpas meaning high-landers with their unique and distinct culture, dialect and costumes fascinating not only the tourists but even our own Bhutanese people. Yeti, the Abominable Snowman is also supposed to roam the snowcapped peaks of the Sanctuary.

Some attractions of interests to visiting tourists is the excursion of Radhi and Phongmey villages popularly known as the ‘rice bowl of the East’, the small religious center and town of Rangjung, excursion of Yangneer village and interaction with the villagers, and trek to Merak and Sakteng Villages. Sherubtse College located a few minutes drive away from the main town was the first accredited college in Bhutan founded in 1966 by a group of Jesuits under the leadership of Sir William Mackey.
