Ura - A Model Rural Village to Experience in Bhutan

Peaceful and serene Ura valley at an elevation of 3,100 meters is located along the west-east lateral highway and a must stopover while passing through. From the main Bumthang town it is about an hour and half drive along the scenic landscape and with a great view of the Mt Gangkar Puensum the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.

There are about 70 houses scattered over the gentle hillslopes and the people are primarily dependent on sheep and yak herding along with subsistence farming. Ura is one of the most beautiful highland valleys of Bhutan with its spectacular landscape, lush green vegetation and wildflowers in the spring. A walk around the fields, ancient homes and talking to local peoples will give you some insights about the life of highlanders. As you pass by the houses, you will see the elderly sitting at the porch either chanting prayers and pulling the prayer beads or chatting with their neighbors. The younger ones will be working in their fields or in the vegetable garden helping their parents. If you are interested, you can also join them and help them in their daily chores.

Ura valley is popular for the Festival called  Ura Yakchoe. This is a local 3 days Festival held in the Spring time every year. Being a community Festival, the experience is very intimate making it a great off the beaten path experience. There are few farmstays that offer basic food and lodge for tourists.

Ura valley is also popular for organizing the unique Matsutake Mushroom every year to celebrate the Mushroom season. The Matsutake Festival is held in August whereby the locals put up stalls that serve mushrooms in different styles, recipes and flavors.

The view from there is the panoramic sight of almost all the tallest Himalayan Mountain of Bhutan like majestic Gangkar Puensum, formidable Table Mountain and Tiger Mountain. As it is located at the top, the view of the Himalayan ranges is better than anywhere in the area, even as compared to famous Dochula Pass.

Clinging on a huge rock towards the north end of the Tang valley lies the Thowa Drak Hermitage just like the famed Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro. From the valley or road point it is a stiff 3 hours hike uphill through the serene and peaceful forest. Sweeping views of the Tang valley and the landscape can be enjoyed along the way with a bird’s eye view from the main site.

A quick visit to the Swiss Cheese Factory and Brewery is a refreshing alternative after visiting many temples and religious sites in the Bumthang valley. The Factory was started in the late 1960’s by a Swiss national Mr Fritz Maurer who visited Bhutan and settled in Bumthang.
