Gangtey Palace was built in the late 1800s as a residence for the then Governor of Paro and inhabited by his descendants over the years. In 1994 the present family converted the palace into a heritage hotel for tourists. The palace is located on a ridge overlooking the Paro valley with a grand view of the Rinpung Dzong/ Fortress, the meandering Paro river and lush paddy fields.
All 19 rooms are decorated in the traditional Bhutanese style with modern amenities and en suite bathroom facilities. Like in every Bhutanese home, Gangtey Palace has a beautiful traditional altar room where guests can meditate alongside the richly decorated shrine replete with statues of all prominent Buddhist saints. The surrounding hills and vegetation provide a cordial environment and the property is a floral treat of a variety of plants, fruit trees and flowers.
Gantey Palace is also featured in the National Geographic 1914 ’Castles in the Air’, Experiences and Journeys in Unknown Bhutan by John Claude White, a British Raj Administrator of the then British East India Company.
